USA Storm Chasing Tour
- May 2024 -

MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS

WHAT'S THE RISKS INVOLVED IN STORM CHASING?

By nature, the storms we are going to chase are Severe and has many risks involved (strong rain, widgusts, big hail, lightnings and tornadoes). However, on the last 30 years, only 3 fatalities unfortunately happened, directly relationed to storms (and it was an exceptional situation). We are equipped com computers and radar software, that allows us to know, in real time, where the storms are, where are they going and where we need to be in the saffest place possible.

As photographers and timelapsers, our goal will always to be a little far away from the storms, allowing us to be out of the rain and to see all the supercells structure and capture the best images possible. Obviously this will imply to be out of the most danger zone, which is what we want to guaranty all the time. In our 3 years chasing in USA, we will never put ourselves in danger and always play safe, even if it makes us loosing the best footage, but it's how we prefer to chase and leaving opportunity to the next storms.

CAN YOU ASSURE WE WILL SEE A TORNADO?

No! And no other storm chasing tour can! But we will do all we can (giving priority to safety) to see a tornado, whenever the conditions are favorable to its.  The chances to see a tornado depends pf many factors: the number of days chasing, the weather pattern when we are chasing. Some patterns are more favorable to severe weather and to tornadoes and others don't. It's impossible to forecast, at this distance, what's the pattern we will get on our tour. Anyway, statistically speaking, May is a very active month, with many storms, so we will have some good chances to see some severe storms, some supercells with amazing structures and, maybe, some tornadoes!

HOW IS THE VAN WE WILL TRAVEL ON?
We will have a perfectly good and safe van, with 11 places, occupied by the 2 ExtremAtmosfera team, and by the 5 guests. Remaining lots of space for all to be confortable and for your luggage and gear, and all will have a place by a window.

HOW WILL BE THE HOTELS WE ARE STAYING?

In USA, there's plenty of good quality hotels. It's one of the biggest expenses of the trip, but we will try to search for clean, safe and cheap hotels. IN the 3 years we've been there, we stayed in many hotel chains, all of them with good quality and affordable. On the end of each day, we will search for a place to sleep near the place we are or we want to be the next day. Part of this trip fun is to search for nice hotels and have very nice surprises when we least expect! On average, the costs will be around 100 Euros per room/night per person (or less, in case anyone wants to share rooms).

HOW WILL BE THE MEALS?

Whenever possible, breakfast will be at the hotel or someplace nearby. Lunches use to be some quick food (sandwiches, pizzas, etc...) that we can take and eat while driving. Depending of the storms, dinners can be a little more relaxed and with hot meals. During the day we will stop some times on gas stations, where anyone can buy some snacks, drinks or light food. Usually no one will starve...the quality of the food can be a little different than what you're used to!

WILL THERE BE INTERNET ACCESS?

We will use a hotspot for our data for radar software and weather information. The hotspot signal will be open for all, but since we will pass through many places with bad signal, we advise that anyone that can take it's own hotspot, to do that. In that way, we can free our hotspot for the most needed radar and weather information, especially when we are chasing storms.

ON THE CALM DAYS; WHAT WILL WE DO?

If we have some calm days, without storms (that could happen), we will try to have some alternative activities. Depending of where we are, we could visit the National Weather Center, some typical places, monuments, National Parks

WHERE WILL WE MEAT WHEN ARRIVING TO DENVER?

We will be already in Denver when you land. Depending of the target for our first day, we can sleep in Denver that night, and in that case we will meet in a hotel, or we can start travelling to our target, as soon as you land. In that case, we will meet in some place or we can get you in the airport.  But some days before we will give these details.

WHAT TO TAKE IN THE LUGGAGE?

Althoughthe van will have plenty of space, we suggest that you take a medium size bag for your clothes (try not to take unnecessary clothes) and a backpack for your camera gear. If possible, try not to take more than 1 tripod.

The Adventure of a lifetime!
